"Windows to the Past" Artwork

I am excited to be one of 12 artists chosen for 2024’s Art in the Park. This year’s theme is “Window into the Past”. How appropriate as we are in celebration of Grand Counties’ 150 th anniversary. I spent much time reflecting on the history and development of this county. So many prominent names and events brought us to where we are today. Before we took claim to this beautiful area it was home to the Ute and Arapahoe Indians. It soon became apparent what direction my painting would take.

I would like to pay homage to the Indigenous people who thrived in this area for hundreds of years before us. They forged the trails later used by trappers and pioneers to settle in this county. For example, the Ute trail crosses between Estes Valley and Grand Lake, today we call it Trail Ridge Road. Experts in herbal medicine, they knew the healing properties of our native plants and trees. We can also thank the Indigenous peoples for introducing us to the mysterious healing powers of the thermal waters of Hot Sulfur Springs, a place where folks still come together to soak in its therapeutic minerals.

Up until the Gold Rush of the late 1800s, Ute and Arapahoe tribes lived and thrived in this area. Through a series of unfortunate events and white man’s greed, both tribes were eventually forced from the land we now know call home. So let’s remember and honor the strong heritage of those who came before us.

Artist Statement

Hello, my name is Wendy Mulberry Carmichael and I was born in Canada, grew up in Arvada Colorado and now reside in Granby. Art has always come quite naturally; I’m self-taught, and proud of it. I draw inspiration from nature and incorporate it into most of my work. I enjoy multiple mediums, but my favorite is water color. It’s exciting with no time to overthink, just go with the flow! For me, art speaks to the subconscious. As a result it can evoke emotions of calm, comfort, exhilaration, and perhaps awaken old memories. I look forward to taking part in this year’s Art in the Park. Thank you to my family and friends for cheering me on!
