Horseback Riding

There are many ways to relish in Colorado’s unparalleled beauty, but one of the best ways to cover some serious acreage is on horseback. Every ride is an unforgettable trip with breathtaking surroundings, blue skies, and fresh air. You can ride along rushing rivers, high alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and waterfalls. No matter the type of adventure you are seeking, Granby offers a variety of options for the beginner to expert equestrian.

GUIDED RIDES

Rocky Mountain Stables at YMCA of the Rockies – Snow Mountain Ranch offers guided trail rides through the Rocky Mountains. Experienced wranglers are available to help pair you up with the right horse and teach you the basics before taking off. Vast views and everlasting memories should be expected.

Winding River Resort, located in Grand Lake, offers rides through the Rocky Mountain National Park. One or two hour tours are available daily, beginning Memorial Day through September 30. Ride through various types of terrain, crossing streams and spotting wildlife. All riders must be at least 6-years-old.

EXPLORE ON YOUR OWN

If you’re bringing your own horse with you, saddle up and head out to the Monarch Lake Trailhead in the Arapaho National Forest. You’ll take a scenic 20 minute drive around Lake Granby before arriving at the trailhead. Monarch Lake boasts tall pine trees, abundant wildlife, and old mining remnants. If you’re short on time, you can ride around the lake on a 4-mile loop. Or, if you’re looking for a longer stroll, climb into the high-alpine forest through the rugged Indian Peaks Wilderness area.

Part of Rocky Mountain National Park is the East Inlet Trail, located on the eastern side of the nearby town of Grand Lake. This trail is wonderful for a day of horseback riding past numerous waterfalls. Less than a quarter-mile into this trail, you’ll approach Adams Falls, an awe-inspiring waterfall overlooking Grand Lake. This is a great spot to have lunch. If you have kids with you, they’ll have a blast playing in the shallow waters and crossing downed trees that lay above the falls, making for a fun stop before continuing on. If you proceed past the falls, you’ll eventually climb to the spectacular shoreline of Lake Verna. Please note that horses are not allowed past Lake Verna.
