Hiking in Backcountry

Adventurers

Granby is a haven for active travelers who want to make the most of their time in the mountains. On the trail and on the water, you’ll find opportunities for challenge, excitement, and some well-deserved time to unwind.

Day 1

Grab a power breakfast at one of Granby’s restaurants and head out for some mountain biking on the Strawberry Trail, only 15 miles from Granby. This out-and-back fourteen-mile ride is moderately difficult, and the scenery is well worth it. Views of alpine valleys and meadows will leave you exhilarated, despite the workout.

Head back to your campsite right on the water at Lake Granby and rest your legs while you spend some time kayaking. If you’re not ready to sit down yet, take the stand-up paddleboard out for a spin.

After you’ve dried off, enjoy the rustic luxuries of camping. Take in the sunset and watch for shooting stars. Just don’t stay up all night—tomorrow is another full day!

Day 2

If you can’t decide between hiking and fishing, why not do both? Throw plenty of food, water, and supplies into your pack, grab your pole, and make tracks all the way to a pristine alpine lake. Take in the views while you try your luck, and don’t forget to take a few photos, too. You can pick out the best ones back at camp in the evening. If you’re eager to share some stories about all the fun you’re having, head into town for a late bite.

Day 3

Sleep in a little and go out for brunch. You’ve earned it! Just make sure to bring your sunscreen, splash gear, and other supplies so you can make the afternoon meet-up time for a rafting trip on Clear Creek with MAD Adventures. The intermediate route takes you over Class III and IV whitewater, so it’s the perfect trip for those who are able to swim and don’t mind paddling the boat as a team along with the guide. At day’s end, reward yourself for all that hard work with some takeout, or watch the evening progress from your table on the deck while you enjoy dinner alfresco.

Day 4

What better way to spend your last morning in the high country than horseback riding? Rise early and take a two-hour ride in Rocky Mountain National Park. Enjoy the sound of your horse splashing across the stream. Watch for wildlife and see if you can add one more species to your long list of sightings.

Later, grab an afternoon coffee and take a leisurely walk through Granby’s main street–style downtown. Treat yourself to dessert. Linger at a table and chat up the locals. They might have some great ideas for things to do when you come back next summer!

There’s no doubt that family-friendly activities abound in Granby. Whether you’re looking for a blood pumping adventure or a low-key bonding experience, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in and around Granby.
